We spent much more time together as a family, in person and virtually, and spent less money since we were not eating out, going to movies, or taking a vacation.

I never dreamed I would see 2021 when I was young. That just sounded like science fiction! I am working this year to form a habit of reading my Bible first thing every morning. If I wait until later in the day, so many things get in the way. My mind is less cluttered early in the morning, and hopefully I will be able to retain more of it!

I can't wait to begin a fresh journal. I still have a few pages to fill in my old one. I thought I would fill it with drawings of my Christmas presents. That would be a fun way to end a crazy year.

I hope to produce more art this year. I want to finish a charcoal drawing I started of a really cool dog I found on the internet. (I got permission from his owner who is also the photographer.) I have more ideas than hours in a day! One of our granddaughters is coming to help go through my huge cabinets in my studio this week. They are packed with stuff I haven't even seen in several years. No telling what we may find! I also have a large antique trunk filled to the brim with fancy fabrics, plus jars full of buttons, laces and vintage hankies I have collected from estate sales. She is a natural born organizer so I am hoping we will find some fun stuff to play with and get organized too! It will probably require a trip to Dollar Tree for bins (and maybe some other fun stuff Haha!) I'm sure there will be pictures to share!

Until then.......

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-413690433283859149.post-89136343432345559032020-12-16T17:56:00.009-06:002020-12-16T19:09:29.941-06:00Urban Sketchers
The USk/DFW group is not meeting in person right now so our group leaders decided to challenge us to draw an interior area of our homes that included Christmas decorations. It was so good to see each other's eyes, at least, and to sketch together! It was a beautiful day when we arrived, then a cold front moved in and cast a shadow and brought a cool breeze with it. But it was still a wonderful outing! As we were getting ready to leave, the sun came back out in all its glory!

Here are my sketches from the day.....

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-413690433283859149.post-91052511104437790812020-10-21T10:51:00.000-05:002020-10-21T10:51:00.780-05:00Fiddle Contest

I finally finished the sketch I started as my 12 year old granddaughter competed in her first Fiddle Contest. She just started taking lessons this year and is doing so well! I was amazed at her confidence as she took the stage and announced her song. I know I am biased, but she really is good!! She was up against kids up to 18 years old that had years of practice and experience and sounded professional. But instead of being discouraged by how good they were, she was planning to learn harder songs for the competition next year! So, this is my sketch of the day....the 25th Annual Chicken and Bread Days Fiddlers Contest in Bowie, TX. (And yes, I just realized that I left the L out of Fiddlers.) Haha!

There will be more about the Festival on the facing page that I will show later. There was a car show, a pumpkin patch, food trucks and vendors all around town. It was so much fun!

The other thing that made this day so special is that this was the only contest this year that was not cancelled because of the pandemic! It was wonderful to see people together and not wearing masks since it was all outdoors. It was good medicine! And Praise God that it was a beautiful, sunny but cool day!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-413690433283859149.post-59482763370655303222020-09-26T17:07:00.000-05:002020-09-26T17:07:47.110-05:00Housecleaning
My granddaughter just spent the night with us. She wanted to spend time in my studio with me, making a new leather journal for her 12th birthday. She remembered every detail about folding the paper, stitching the book together, setting rivets, everything! I was so proud of her! This is her new leather journal filled with Canson Mixed Media paper.....

Immediately after she finished her beautiful journal, I put her to work cleaning my house from top to bottom. He has restored park benches, a pew that was found along the side of the road in pieces, a swing, tables, chairs and now a stained glass window that came out of our old church downtown when we built a new campus further south. Our neighbor and friend, bought this old window when the building was being demolished. It was in pretty sad shape. Wayne carefully removed the windows from their old metal frame, cleaned the old caulking and adhesive from the glass, and built a new cedar frame for them. We never think to get 'before' pictures, but this is the beautiful final result......

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-413690433283859149.post-77351065456774854252020-09-20T14:34:00.002-05:002020-09-20T19:21:20.595-05:00Time For a Change!
Our blog has looked the same for about 6 or 7 years and it is about time for a change. I am trying on new looks as I figure what it needs. It was time to remove the fiber art banner since it just doesn't represent my art any longer. And since Blogger has completely changed also, I am having to learn as I go. Don't be surprised to see several changes over the next few weeks! I went back to revisit and finish filling my Italy travel journal of our trip to Tuscany in 2017 yesterday. I did it as part of our Urban Sketchers virtual get-together. Since we still can't gather together because of Covid, we were to choose a photo of a favorite past vacation, or a place we would love to visit. Italy was both for me.
It was fun, going through my pictures to choose a reference photo while listening to Andrea Bocelli and eating linguine and pesto imported from Italy! We would love to return to Italy again. It was an amazing place and so beautiful! This sketch is from a photo of the countryside from our bus window.
I am not as happy with this one as I was with the last, but I did learn a lot. I didn't get the color right and when I put a wash over it to try to correct it, I lost some detail. Then, when I scanned it into the computer, a weird gray tint showed up on the back two petals. I plan to redo this one, but I think I would like to do something completely different first.
I learn more with every tutorial and appreciate the pointers I get from posting my work on Anna's school website. It was fun to do a flower this time and learn to paint white petals on a white background. I also keep learning that I need to stop the video to let my paint dry and to take my time so I will quit transferring paint from the side of my hand to the white background. It was so cute and something Wayne had to have for his squirrels. So, this morning after church, Wayne went into his wood shop and came out a short time later with this.....

He decided to lower the seat on the next one for the squirrels to be able to sit more comfortably but he placed this one in our yard at the base of the tree to see what the squirrels would think. I decided that to get the most out of the school, I would go in the recommended order. The second tutorial was the mushrooms, below:

There were many colorful tutorials I would rather have completed, but I learned about texture and blending and spotting subtle color changes, things I might have missed if I had not taken this tutorial. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-413690433283859149.post-55904666860755863112020-04-17T18:11:00.000-05:002020-04-19T12:05:31.716-05:00I'm So Excited!

While we are stuck in place, I decided I wanted to learn more about painting with watercolor. I found an online teacher that I really like (Her lovely British accent and soft spoken manner don't hurt!) Her name is Anna Mason, and her school is at: https://www.annamasonart.com/.

I am excited and I want to show off my first project! I don't have all the exact colors she uses, so while she is mixing paints at a leisurely pace on her palette, I am madly mixing a little of this and a little of that on mine trying to come up with a hue to match hers as closely as possible. I was going to go ahead and buy all the paints she uses, but I actually think I will learn more about mixing paint this way. So, without further ado, this is my William's Pear from the Anna Mason School tutorial......
So, our group leaders came up with an idea to post a new challenge on our facebook page every hour, starting at 10:00 am and ending at 6:00 pm. We then posted our drawings in the comments section below each challenge. I followed along as long as I could, but doing a whole sketch every hour for 9 hours was way more than my hand could handle. : ) I completely finished the first two challenges, and got another three sketched out in pencil. Since Saturday, I have finished the other three.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Our winner was Nguyen Khang, who finished all 9 challenges with his beautiful sketches. The Grand Prize is a 6 roll package of toilet paper to be delivered to Khang at the next gathering after all this craziness is over. And of course, he also received this beautiful golden virtual trophy, <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span aria-live="polite" class="fbPhotosPhotoCaption" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="fbPhotoSnowliftCaption" tabindex="0">designed by Robyn Jorde......
We saw one of our granddaughters play basket ball! Her team lost but it was a close game and it was so much fun to watch her play.

we stuffed ourselves at a Mexican restaurant and we watched part of a Transformer movie with the boys. The boys are all taller than me now, one by almost a foot!

Our granddaughters sometimes enjoy drawing or coloring with me. The youngest asked me to draw her and sat very still and patiently.....until she found out that a boy from school was outside playing basketball with her older brothers. My model quickly decided that she needed to be outside skating with her sister (keeping an eye on the boys). Haha! I snapped a quick photo of her before she left to finish the drawing later.

Here is my sketch.....
Wayne recognized who the drawing was of, so I guess its fairly close. I think maybe her mouth is off, not quite sure. But I hope she will like it.
